Does anyone have a favorite photo editor you can recommend?

I use Microsoft Digital Photo Suite 2006 and absolutely LOVE it! It's simple, but does all the things I need done (Photoshop is super expensive and truthfully seems more for pros).
I know there are free photo editing programs you can find on the web, but I never had any luck.
And GERMANY!! Wooo hooo! I was there for around two years and managed only to pick up phrases. Almost everyone there knew English, though I think they like it when you can say the basics (yes, no, thank you) and not butcher their language.
In what part does your friend live? I'll be glad to give you all my travel advice...are you going to stay solely in Germany? or do a little country hopping? How exciting! When do we leave?? ;)
I find photoshop to be a great one to use. I of course got by copy through legal means and would not in any way thing that getting it off a programme say limewire, and then say looking up a key would work
